Labor Day Weekend: Church Sites and St. Louis

3 day weekend? New city? Yes please! Brian planned another great weekend for us!  We wanted to see St. Louis since we live about 7 hours away from it. So on the way down we stopped in Nauvoo and Carthage to see some church sites.

Nauvoo Temple. There was a wedding taking pictures outside the temple when we got there.  Within minutes Brian got roped into taking some pictures for them.

View from the temple.
Joseph Smith loved that the temple would overlook the river

We took a wagon ride around the countryside where the missionaries
told us stories about the saints that used to live in Nauvoo.

Cute old missionaries.  Pretty sure they are required to
wear suspenders and cowboy hats.

The original Browning gun shop.

An original Nauvoo Temple dedication plate - commissioned from the Twigg Potteries in Staffordshire by Lucius N. Scoville when he was on his mission in England in 1846

The best part about Nauvoo is that the church has restored a
lot of it to look like it did when the early saints lived there. Lots of cute buildings.

On the way out of town we were hungry and found this cute frozen yogurt shop.  Most of the city of Carthage is kind of run down, but not this shop! We went inside and found that it is run by the cutest old man ever! He started the shop in honor of his mother, who spent her life serving and helping the children of the community. So in honor of her, this cute old man donates all his profits to scholarships to continue to help the children. So awesome.

It was nice to stop in Nauvoo and see all the church sites. Brian and I never thought we would see all the church sites, but we have been to nearly all of them now! Next on the itinerary is St. Louis! We hit three major stops while in St. Louis - Forest Park, Pappy's BBQ, and the Gateway Arch.

Forest Park - 1300 acres of bike trails, museums, the zoo and many other sites to see.
Fountains outside of the art museum

Entrance to the zoo...which is FREE...but we didn't have time to go

The Jewel Box - mini botanical garden

A blue angel jet!

The planetarium, which I wanted to explore, but it was closed.

Pappy's!!! The world's greatest BBQ! The walls are lined with menus signed by movie stars and  professional athletes.  They cook their meat in these giant ovens outside, and are open until the food runs out! Which it does.  We got there right when it opened and still had to wait in line to be seated. The line ends up wrapping around the entire building...it is crazy!

Brian got their world famous ribs

I got some pulled pork

The Gateway Arch and Old Courthouse

The Old Courthouse is where Dred Scott sued for his freedom and
women fought for the right to vote. So it is kind of a big deal.

There were flags everywhere! I don't know if the courthouse is always decorated that way or if it was because of the holiday weekend...but it was 'Merica!

Statue of Dred Scott and his wife

The Gateway Arch!

We had to take these little egg shaped carts up a
weird tram to the top of the arch

This really cool wall mural showed all the major national
monuments in size relation to the Gateway Arch

We had such a great vacation and saw so many cool things.  So glad I get to explore the world and take adventures with Brian. He makes life so fun!
